Partnering with a fellow Virginia native, Bruce Thompson, Gold Key | PHR CEO and founder, led the renovation and revitalization of the Cavalier Hotel. Tarnished Truth holds the distinction of being the first and only distillery in a hotel in the United States. Legendary master distiller, Larry Ebersold, with more than 40 years of experience, leads the distilling team bringing world class spirits to Virginia Beach.
The late Dr. George G. Moore had a great passion for single malt whisky and his adopted home in Virginia. A native Irishman, George came to the U.S. in the 1970’s to seek new opportunities. In 2011, after many years of building successful businesses in both the U.S. and Ireland, George finally had the chance to combine his two passions when he started Virginia Distillery Company. Today, George’s wife, Angela Moore and their son, Gareth Moore, along with his wife, Maggie Moore, have taken the helm to continue building George’s dream.
At A. Smith Bowman Distillery, we know a thing or two about aging well. As the oldest distillery in Virginia, we’ve learned a lot about our craft, not only from our founding fathers but from experimentation and innovation. Along our journey, we’ve always paid attention to the tiniest details in every step of the process. From fermentation of our mash to filling up our stills, nicknamed “Mary” and “George”, which pay homage to the parents of the Bowman Brothers — we stay true to our time honored traditions. As a result, we have our award-winning pioneer spirits to showcase.
Until 30 years ago, whiskey for popular consumption, had been made in column stills, handling thousands of gallons per hour. Only at Belmont Farm, our whiskey is produced in a genuine solid copper pot still. While others may be flooding the market, our pot still whiskey is slow and handled with care, to preserve all of the aroma and taste of a fine fresh whiskey. Our copper pot still is truly the secret of our whiskey.
The company is co-located with the Spring Lake Bottled Water Co. within the Isle of Wight Industrial Park in Isle of Wight County. Blue Sky Distillery is owned and operated by Mark and Kim Rangos. Mark and Kim are originally from Wellsburg WV and moved to the Carrollton VA area in 2010. Blue Sky Distillery is the first distillery in the state of Virginia to become a certified Virginia Green partner. This certification is an active commitment to minimize the environmental impact of our company.

Rick Wasmund started Copper Fox in 2005, one of the first of the new breed of American distillers. But the fire started long before. Fascinated with the aromas of wood smoke since childhood and lured by the rich sumptuousness of Scottish single malts, Rick apprenticed at the famed Bowmore Distillery before returning home to create truly original and singular whiskies: hand malted barley smoked with American fruitwoods and aged with innovative wood treatments.
